The 1st battalion of the Honourable Artillery Company arrived in France on 20th September, 1914, and spent the next 6 weeks as Lines of Communications troops before joining 8 Brigade of 3rd Division on 9th November at Zelobes near Estaires. On the following day they marched with the rest of the brigade to Croix Barbée where they went into support trenches in front of Neuve Chapelle. Over the next few days they were engaged in digging trenches at Croix Barbée, Rouge Croix and La Couture and it was at Rouge Croix that the battalion suffered its first fatality when Francis Milne was killed by shell fire on 14th November. |
